October 2024

Wednesday October 2nd

I'm still under the weather so Laz headed to baji-naji, awaiting our new mattress. He pulled the old one out into the main cabin, but the new one did not arrive. Other chores: filled the forward water tank, troubleshooting the pump for the fridge water (not working). He was texting with Nate Horton, who installed it, and got a few steps in, then Nate had to set up for the Annapolis power boat show which starts tomorrow. Laz also tried to fix soda drawer with no joy.

Thursday October 3rd

I'm feeling a bit better today so we headed to Giant for some home and boat provisions, then to the marina. We thought the new mattress would be arriving today, but Laz called once we got to Tidewater (around 1300) and they apologized, but for sure it will be delivered tomorrow. We loaded the provisions in cabinets and fridge, after turning the temp to 15° from the 25° I had set it at before we left for Chicago. It has stayed pretty frost free, which was nice. Since it was mostly empty, it also stayed cold. We were able to do a few other chores to get baji-naji ready for our next trip: New chlorine tablets installed in the Purasan, and installed the new windlass remote. Laz had to rewire it differently than the diagram showed, as the picture was backwards. Go figure. My suggestion to try it bass-ackward. It works great now!

Team effort to fix the soda drawer. I found a strange tab thing with my fingers towards the front of the drawer that went in and out, perpendicular to the front of the drawer. Using the cellphone camera, Laz figured out the mechanism to unlatch it and was able to get the drawer out. With it out, he put sturdier screws in the track. Once done, we could load the soda drawer again. It sure is a weird and complicated way to get the drawer in and out, especially as the whole thing was held in place by tiny screws.

Checked the date on the house batteries, since we had the aft mattress out. September 2021. We replaced them some time ago, just could not remember when. We will have to check the forward batteries in the off season. Tomorrow there should be a new mattress!

Friday October 4th.

Packed up clothes, meds, and the rest of the provisions and headed down to Tidewater. There was a large cardboard box waiting for us in front of our slip! It had a big hole in it, but everything was in there. I put away the provisions first since there were many frozen and cold items. Laz pulled the boat all the way aft in the slip using the bumpers so we could wrestle the new mattress aboard. It definitely took both of us, even with it in 2 pieces.

Oh my goodness it is lovely and fits beautifully! It is a fair bit higher than the old one, but it's got real coils, individually wrapped for minimal motion and a cush top. The new sheets smell too new and will need to be washed before putting them on. We used the mattress protector from the old mattress and the fitted king sheet, which worked nicely. Laz used a fid to get both in, lol.

We then washed the boat, first with soap and water and then with the Starbrite non skid. She looks nice all clean.

Headed over to the last First Friday of the year and over to 410 Empanadas, which started as a food truck. We both got 3 empanadas and split the zucchini stix. I had a TexMex (yum), a mushroom (which was mostly a mushroom sauce and not chunks of mushrooms)beef and a spinach (which was amazing). Laz had a TexMex, a Korean BBQ (really good) and a regular BBQ (good but not special).

Saw this fancy Ravens jacket and did NOT get it for my friend Lee. I did text this photo to her and she said she saw a woman wearing this exact jacket at the game last weekend.

Apple pie empanadas for dessert. Yum! A bit too sweet with both powdered sugar and caramel sauce. They would be lovely without either.

Tomorrow we will sail! Not sure where, but there is supposed to be wind.

Saturday October 5th

Up by 0830. Sleeping on the new mattress was heavenly! I opened my Mobjack Bay Roaster Waterman's Blend and Deadrise decaf beans for coffee. Mmmm! We realized we didn't have enough milk for a trip, so Laz ran to the grocery store after we pulled Boji off the dinghy rack together.

A gorgeous day to head out. I pumped more air in Boji and then got the code-0 out. I was putting it together and raising it when Laz came back with milk. We finished raising the code-0, then headed to the fuel dock. Had to use the outside fuel dock since we didn't realize there was a powerboat on the inside dock. We fueled up and did a pump out and rinse. Laz rowed Boji over from the boat ramp and we tied her on her usual cleat after putting the marble chips bag in her stern.

We were off the fuel dock at 1130. We had great wind from N NNW NNE 7-14kts and could go wing out of the channel.

Can you tell we are happy to be under sail?

Laz put up the Arsenal burgee and we put the game on. Now we have figure out where we are going.

Saw a Paxy colored boat go whipping by.

We were moving quickly with a nice assist from the outgoing tide of +2 kts at one point by Poole's.

We passed this lovely Tartan with an interesting aft sail. Ketch? Yawl?

I texted to see if the B-Ds were out on this lovely day. Lee responded that they were racing to Rock Hall and spending the night there at Haven Harbor North. We passed Worton around 3p, so we made a last minute decsion to head to Rock Hall. Haven Harbor North was full of course, but Osprey Point had a slip. Got the slip assignment right away since we were heading in after hours. We double clutched on the fairway and went in then out then back in again, as I was not sure we were in the right place. We were the first time.
Rich from R-Wanda-or helped us with our lines. Got in smoothly this time. We were docked by 1715. I was messaging back and forth with the B-Ds and said we would meet them over at HH North for dinner with the racing group.

Dinner was a mini crabcake, potato salad, cole slaw and a pretzel roll (not shown) and the B-Ds graciously paid for our supper.

Racing results: Lee and John won first place in their class!!! This was the in PSA race, Baltimore to Rock Hall. It was fun to meet some of the other racers, including another woman captain.

With the happy winners. Why yes, I am making faces to make everyone laugh for the photo. Doesn’t everyone?

After a lovely catch up, we wandered back next door to Osprey Point and settled in for the night. No idea where we are headed tomorrow, but I am sure we will figure it out.

Sunday October 6th

Left at noon after lots of conversations on the dock. We caught up with Rich from R. Wanderor, as they winter their boat at Tidewater. We chatted with a Greg Nease lookalike on Allure, which was across the dock from us, and also talked to the folks on the powerboat next to us.

I made scrambled eggs with mushrooms and spinach and fresh baked croissants for brunch.

The following is just my log; pictures will be put in soon.

Soft wind built to 9-12 very nice S wind Headed towards the South River. Tacked a few times and the last time I thought we would have to tack again, but the wind shifted just E enough to sail under the Bay Bridge. Lovely sail boat race in front of us so we tacked to be out of the race course. Watched the downwind leg and the spinnaker dousing and rounding up. Headed for Thomas Point light as as it was getting past 5p decided to tuck into Selby Bay instead of going up to Harness Creek. To Selby Bay off the South River at 1810.

Monday October 7th

Up at 0930 and off anchor by 0950. Made quick breakfast of my whole wheat walnut chocolate chip banana bread plus a cider donut, and yogurt and coffee while on the go. Good wind from mostly due N 13-18 kts, flew over to Bloody Point then gybed to go into Eastern Bay and round up to the Wye and the Miles River and St. Michael's. Tucked into Fogg Creek around 1430 for good protection from the N NW winds forecast 10-15 with gusts to 20.

Somewhere South anchored around 1530, they peeked into Fogg Creek but felt there wasn't enough space for them so they anchored a bit farther out. Met at 1700 ashore and walked over to The Bistro for dinner. Nice cheese plate and baked brie. I had a good seadood gumbo but not nice on tummy over night. Kori had crabcakes and everyone else had steak frites. Nice profiteroles with delicious salted caramel gelato. Walked to JoJo's for ice cream for everyone else. Nice to spend time with them and their daughter Ella, who is at Appalachian State, affected by Hurricane Helene. Shane and Kori live in New Bern.

Tips on the market for ginger snaps and other yummies. Brought the lamp to Boji back, had the Happy Lights on, but not the anchor light.

Tuesday October 8th

Took Boji into town for breakfast at Sprouts. Nice yogurt and crushed biscotti and a donkey donut, aka ass end of babka. Laz had a coffee cake that was gluten free and surprisingly delicious. I had a mocha which I didn't finish. Bought chocolate babka and chicken salad and curry chicken salad. Walked down the street and found Blue Heron Coffee, taken over by a younger couple and very nice. Got a cafe aulait (Laz finished my mocha) and some beans

Went across the street to the Village Market which was marvelous!! Got pork chops, cheddar biscuits, shrimp salad, a banh mi (chicken and pickled veggies on a sub roll) for lunch today, a pineapple coconut yogurt and the ginger snaps that the Grahams recommended.

Motored to our previous anchorage up the Wye for a quiet afternoon.

Wednesday October 9th

Wildgrain Belgian waffles, blackberries and maple syrup for breakfast with added yogurt for me. Anchor up and away 0930

Wind ~13kts to start, sailed out the Wye and two tacks to get down Eastern Bay and across to Herring Bay. Wind built and when it was consistently more than 16kts we reefed one on the main. When it was holding 20-24kts then down to 18kts and back up, we reefed the jib and put a second reef on the main. We were over 6kts of boat speed the whole way, with a few times over 7, even reefed .Arrived at Herrington Harbor South at 1430, no answer on the VHF so we pulled onto the C dock T. About an hour later a dockhand came to give us info, we already had a bathroom key. Filled the aft water tank.

Dinner at Ketch-22 seared ahi tacos pesto pasta, deviled eggs with bacon, whipped feta with toasted pistachios, oregano, EVOO

Thursday October 10th

Up at 0800, wind prediction of 15-20 gusts to 25 from the N which is where we want to go. Ugh. Better predicted tomorrow with 10-15 from the NW. Decided to stay put. Texted with Barb, she made it through the night with only some branches knocked down from Milton, no power but they have a generator, some cases of water and a tub full. The other tub drained out.  Heated some chocolate babka and Tess 'scherry scone for breakfast, and yogurt and coffee. Did zoom dance class from the cabin in the galley/ companionway area. Then a walk through the whole property, which we have never done. It's a long way around , maybe 2 miles, lots of beautiful boats. They are repairing some of the decking. Saw a heron. The big party tent is a big party tent, waterfall and stunning view of Herring Bay. Met a couple on Serenity, a 40+ powerboat, from Yardley on our walk back. Chatted about boating.

Lemon dill shrimp salad sandwiches for lunch from Village Shoppe Market in St. Michael's. Delish! As are the ginger snaps that the Grahams love.  Got a nap in. I have plenty of provisions for dinner, but Ketch-22 has their new Fall menu, so headed back there for dinner. Mashed potato "hush puppies" so good. I had the Maryland Crab soup and a house salad with grilled shrimp and Laz had their bacon jam burger. Dessert menu had not changed so we walked over to the market and got a chocolate blackout cake. Back to baji-naji for Thursday night football. So many friends posting Aurora pix that we bundled up and walked to the beach. Couldn't really see with light pollution, maybe faintly but the camera caught it. Very cool. Not as vivid as some but definitely there. Back to baji-naji for the game. 49ers won, but tried hard to lose.

Friday October 11th

Up late, 0930. I blame San Francisco and Seattle. Off the dock by 1050, sails up at 1120. Good wind 8-10 from WNW oscillating W.

Then died just before Thomas Point light and stayed confused until we went under the Bay Bridge. Motored into the Magothy, then unfurled the jib and sailed in with 8-9kts from due W. Sails down when we passed Dobbins and motored in. Anchor down by 5pm. 2 sailboats and a motor boat here already and another sailboat just ahead of us anchoring. The motorboat left after sunset and another pretty dark hulled motor boat came in and anchored just before sunset. Mexican Street corn soup with sauteed chicken and cheddar stuffed baguette for dinner. No comet. Chilly with the sun down. Listened to Jungle Junior's podcast about the Ravens game.

Saturday October 12th

Up at 0930.  Nomadic crustless quiche bacon, caramelized onion and cheddar, and an Oso plain scone for breakfast with the last of the Bailey farm cantaloupe. International break, so no footy to listen to.

Wind was good from 8-10 from W, sails up after leaving the cove and sailed out of the Magothy on a reach then wing through the channel. Furled the jib and pulled out the code-0. Whee! Good wind past Gibson Island then dropped at the Patapsco and minimal before Poole's. Furled the code-0 and motor sailed for a bit past Poole's then wind picked up to 7-9 from S-SSW. Tanker Stolt Sun heading down the channel. Misjudged the channel so got 5 horns. Engine on and crossed channel quickly and got yelled at by the Captain via VHF.  She was quite upset. Sailed on. Furled the code-0 after passing Fairlee so we could motor past the shallow bump. Anchor down at 1645. 975.5
